Alpha Beautillion

Since the early 1900’s, organizations such as Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Jack & Jill, The Urban League, 100 Black Men and other Black Greek Letter Fraternities across the United States began to instill strong standards of culture, scholarship and academic excellence in the lives of young African-American men. Hence, the idea behind this celebration became the “Beautillion”. The existence of cultural awareness, etiquette, confidence and self motivation has been proven to be key attributes in the success of young men all over the world. The BSL Foundation has chosen the Beautillion concept to celebrate the accomplishments of young men.

The mission of the Alpha Beautillion Program, as sponsored by the BSL Foundation, is to assist college bound seniors within Hartford and surrounding areas in preparing them for college, securing scholarship funding and presenting them to their local community at a formal event.  The program has 4 components: Development sessions, Mentorship, Scholarship, and the Beautillion Gala.

Personal Development: Beautillion participants (Beaus) participate in monthly leadership development sessions on a variety of topics including communication, etiquette, public speaking, and a variety of the other topics to help them transition from high school to college. These sessions are usually on the 2nd and 4th Sundays from 3pm – 5pm 

Mentor: Each beau is paired with a member of the fraternity that serves as a mentor. Each mentor is a college graduate or college young man that will have similar professional and personal interest as the beau. The mentors serve as a resource for the beau throughout the senior year and through the first year of college.

Scholarship Bank: The family, the beau, and the mentor work together to raise support for the beau scholarship bank. This is done through the non-profit foundation that supports the program so all contributions collected are tax deductible. As part of that program the beau receives a monetary scholarship based on the support raised.

Beautillion Gala: At the conclusion of the year, all beaus who complete the program are formally presented during our annual Beautillion Gala. This is a formal event to celebrate and honor the beaus.
